Best HIPAA compliant e-signature tools

2 tools compared. Checked 6 Nov 2026.

Consent forms and intake packets often hold patient details, so check your e-signature plan before sending them.

Where to start

Docusign names its plans, which makes coverage easier to confirm, so ask about it first. Adobe Acrobat Sign doesn’t name plans, so get the license details from Adobe in writing.

Adobe Acrobat Sign

On some plans

Adobe lists Acrobat Sign as a HIPAA-Ready Service and says customers need the correct license and a signed BAA with Adobe to process PHI, without naming qualifying plans.

Covered: Acrobat Sign under the correct license with a signed Adobe BAA (Adobe does not name the plans).

Left out: Any service not designated HIPAA-Ready, and more.

DocuSign

On some plans

Docusign may enter a BAA with a HIPAA covered entity. Its plans page offers HIPAA support through a BAA on Enhanced plans, and lists HIPAA (BAA) as contact sales on every IAM tier.

Covered: eSignature Enhanced and IAM for Enterprise, through sales; IAM Starter, Standard and Professional show HIPAA (BAA) as contact sales, so confirm with Docusign.

Before you choose

  • Confirm the BAA covers your exact plan and every feature you’ll use.
  • Get the BAA signed before any patient data goes in.
  • Turn on the settings the vendor requires, and train your staff on them.

This isn’t legal advice. A BAA is one requirement. Your clinic still has to set the tool up correctly and control who has access. Vendors change their terms, so confirm before you sign. PHI means protected health information, which includes patient data.
